[26.01 22:53] . Saxo Bank Professional Team Press Release.Yesterday, Team Saxo Bank’s Alberto Contador won the first mountain stage of the Argentinean stage race, Tour de San Luis and today, the Spaniard were to defend his overall leadership. Before the 19.5 grueling kilometers against the clock, the Team Saxo Bank rider had just a 4 second lead over American, Levi Leipheimer (Omega-Pharma Quick Step).

However, Italian rider, Vincenzo Nibali first stole the limelight by crossing the finish line in a new best time counting 22.56 minutes but soon after, Leipheimer thundered across the finish line in smashing in 22.33 minutes and conquered the overall lead of the race.

Team Saxo Bank’s Alberto Contador finished sixth on the stage, 1 minute and 1 second behind the American:

”Leipheimer was the natural favorite to take the win today and he a very good job on the time trial. As I mentioned before, Alberto (Contador) is not in peak shape and that influences his performance today. And he doesn’t have to peak at this moment. With yesterday’s big win, he showed his great class by winning a mountain stage after six months’ break from racing and that’s more than we could have hoped for. Now, we’ll focus on the next few stages taking one at a time and besides from that, we’re really enjoying seeing our new guys, Troels (Vinther) and Chris (Juul-Jensen) doing a tremendous job for the team here,” commented Philippe Mauduit after the stage.

Christopher Juul-Jensen is a new rider at Team Saxo Bank but you would never know by the look of the results from today’s time trial where the Dane finished 21st with a loss of 1 minute and 50 seconds to Levi Leipheimer (Omega-Pharma Quick Step):

“I’m actually a little surprised of the result but sure I’m satisfied with finishing among the 21 strongest on today’s time trial. The objective was to give full gas all the way to test myself and to test my position on the bike in order to evaluate and to make improvements afterwards. Bjarne (Riis) was in the car behind me guiding me through the course and making notes about my position so hopefully I’ll do even faster later on,” said Christopher Juul-Jensen after the stage.
