UCI Press Release. The Belgian town of Koksijde will be the winter seaside destination for the world’s best cyclo-cross specialists as well as any fans wishing to watch their heroes in action.
On January 28th and 29th, this fascinating coastal community located in the north-western part of Belgium will host the first UCI World Championships of the year. The UCI Cyclo-cross World Championships return to this location for the second time after 1994. Most of those who will compete at the end of January are familiar with Koksijde’s sand dunes, which each year provide the backdrop for a round of the Patrick UCI Cyclo-cross World Cup.
This year will see the introduction of an extra challenge: the X Dune. After the World Championships this dune will be named after the new World Champion!
Some 50,000 spectators are expected to line the Koksijde dunes for the World Championships, which were last held in Belgium five years ago – when the battle for the world title was raced in Hooglede-Gits and won by Belgian rider Erwin Vervecken.
The 2012 edition is one of UCI’s first World Championships to be awarded the UCI reCycling label, thanks to the organisers’ environmental plan which focuses on the use of public transport, catering and waste management. Koksijde is proving to the cycling world that by implementing simple and practical actions, an event can significantly change its relationship with the environment, building a greener image for cycling.
