Δεν υπάρχει αθλητής ο οποίος δεν έχει φοβίες. Ακόμα και οι επαγγελματίες αθλητές έχουν πάρα πολλές φοβίες τις οποίες πολλές φορές εκφράζουν και δημόσια.
Παγκόσμια πρωταθλήτρια του Τριάθλου ανέφερε χαρακτηριστικά ότι αισθάνεται πολύ άβολα να κολυμπάει με τόσες αθλήτριες γύρω της και ότι φοβάται μήπως έχει κάποιο ατύχημα.Η ίδια εξομολογήθηκε ότι ηρεμεί μόνο όταν κατεβαίνει από το ποδήλατο.
Οι πρώτες εμπειρίες μας σε ένα άθλημα είναι σημαντικές για τις φοβίες τις οποίες θα δημιουργήσουμε. Το 1993 στο πρώτο Ironman που έτρεξα στο Almere όταν άνοιξαν οι πόρτες ξεχύθηκαν 1300 άτομα σε μία γραμμή εκκίνησης πλάτους το πολύ 20-30 μέτρων.Αποτέλεσμα ήταν στα πρώτα 50 μέτρα να με βουλιάξουν την στιγμή που ήθελα να πάρω αναπνοή.
Φυσικά μία τέτοια δυσάρεστη εμπειρίαχρειάζεται κάποιος χρόνος και σωστή μέθοδο για να την ξεπεράσει. Ομως οι περισσόυτεροι αθλητές δεν νιώθουν άνετα να συζητούν τέτοιες εμπειρίες και κυρίως να στέκονται με ειλικρίνεια απέναντι σε αυτές.
Το πρώτο είναι να καταγράψουμε τις φοβίες μας, που εάν είμαστε ειλικρινείς είναι πάρα πολλές.
Το επόμενο είναι να αποτυπώσουμε το μέγεθος της κάθε φοβίας, «βαθμολογώντας» την κάθε φοβία από το 1 έως το 10, με το ένα να αντιπροσωπεύει μία μικρή φοβία και το 10 μία πολύ σημαντική φοβία. Συζυτώντας με ειλικρίνεια το ζήτημα με τον προπονητή μας ή κάποιον αθλητικό ψυχολόγο θα μπορέσουμε να το αποτυπώσουμε στην σωστή βάση και ίσως να επαναθεωρήσουμε την βαρύτητα που του δίνουμε. Ετσι εκεί που του δίναμε μία βαθμολογία 10 ίσως με την συζήτηση να το αξιολογήσουμε ως λιγότερο σημαντικό δίνοντας ένα βαθμό7-8 και μετά από αρκετή προσπάθεια και συνεργασία με τον προπονητή μας να του δίνουμε 4-5 στην κλιμακα βαρύτητας
Μία εξαιρετική προσέγγιση είναι να προσεγγίζουμε τον κάθε αγώνα μας ως μία λίστα στόχων που πρέπει να φέρουμε σε πέρας βασιζόμενοι στα δυνατά μας σημεία και ανατρέχοντας σε πράγματα που έχουμε κάνει στην προπόνηση ή σε προηγούμενους αγώνες και τα οποία θα μας δίνουν αυτοπεποίθηση για την εκπλήρωση αυτών των μικρών στόχων.
Π.χ. εάν φοβόμαστε εάν ή όχι να ολοκληρώσουμε έναν αγώνα μεγάλης απόστασης είναι απαραίτητο να σπάσουμε τον αγώνα σε μικρούς στόχους. Εάν καθίσετε στην γραμμή εκκίνησης ενός αγώνα Ironman και σκεφθείτε ότι πρέπει να κολυμπήσετε 3,8χλμ – 180 χλμ ποδηλασίας και 42,2 χλμ τρεξίματος τότε μάλλον θα σας κυριεύσει πανικός. Εάν όμως σπάσετε τον αγώνα σε μικρούς στόχους,η εκπλήρωση του καθένα από τους οποίους θα σας συναμώνει την αυτοποίθηση τότε είναι σίγουρο ο « εχθρός προ των πυλών» όλο και θα υποχωρεί.
Πολλοί ποδηλάτες έχουν φοβία στο τελικό σπριντ ή σε αγώνες όπου το γκρουπ κινείται με μεγάλη ταχύτητα. Εάν αυτή η φοβία δεν αντιμετωπιστεί συνηδειτά τότε είναι σίγουρο ότι μόνη της δεν θα εξαφανιστεί. Αντιθέτως σταδιακά θα γίνεται όλο και πιο έντονη.
