Οταν εφευρέθηκε το ψηφιακό ρολόι χειρός που προσέφερε και χρονόμετρο αυτό είχε θεωρηθεί πολύ μεγάλη τεχνολογική εξέλιξη και βοήθεια για τους αθλητές οι οποίοι γυμνάζονταν σε ένα γήπεδο στίβου παρακολουθώντας την ταχύτητά τους. Τα ψηφιακά χρονόμετρα με τον καιρό εξελίχθηκαν ώστε να προσφέρουν στον χρήστη τους δυνατότητα αποθήκευσης στοιχείων, δυνατότητα καταγραφής πολλαπλών χρονικών διαστημάτων (laps), δυνατότητα αντίστροφης μέτρησης, φωτισμού της οθόνης για τις προπονήσειςς κατά την διάρκεια της νύχτας, δυνατότητα προγραμματισμού των χρονικών διαστημάτων μίας Interval προπόνησης κ.λπ.
Οταν πριν 20-25 χρόνια εφευρέθηκε ο προσωπικός παλμογράφος όλοι μιλούσαν για μία επανάσταση στην προπονητική καθώς ο αθλητής πλέον δεν ήταν υποχρεωμένος να προπονείται εντός σταδίου για να μπορεί να παρακολουθεί την ένταση της προπόνησής τους. Εξ’ άλλου η καρδιακή συχνότητα αποτελούσε την καλύτερη ένδειξη μέτρησης της έντασης της προπόνησης μετά την συγκένρωση γαλακτικού οξέος και την κατανάλωση οξυγόνου τα οποία ήταν αδύνατο να παρακολουθούνται σε καθημερινή βάση. Ιδιαίτερα για δραστηριότητες όπως η ποδηλασία επιτέλους είχε εφευρεθεί ένας τρόπος να παρακολουθείται η ένταση της προπόνησης ενός αθλητή ξέχωρα από τις καιρικές συνθήκες (κατεύθυνση και ένταση ανέμου, θερμοκρασία περιβάλλοντος) και την μορφολογία εδάφους.
Σήμερα το ατομικό αθλητικό ρολόι ενός αθλητή είναι ένας μίνι-υπολογιστής με πολλαπλές δυνατότητες όπως:
- Ψηφιακό ρολόι με πολύ μεγάλη μνήμη όπου μπορούν να καταγραφούν πολλά στοιχεία της προπόνησης ακόμα και να γίνει εκ των προτέρων προγραμματισμός της προπόνησης. Ηχητικά σήματα που ενημερώνουν για τις αλλαγές ρυθμού και έντασης που πρέπει να κάνουμε. Ακόμα και για το πότε θα πρέπει να αναπληρώσουμε θρεπτικά συστατικά και υγρά ενημερωνόμαστε διαμέσου του ατομικού μας αθλητικού ρολογιού.
- Παλμογράφος με πολύ μεγάλη ακρίβεια στην μέτρηση των σφύξεων της καρδιάς του αθλητή. Τα σύγχρονα ατομικά αθλητικά ρολόγια προσφέρουν δυνατότητα δημιουργίας ζωνών προπόνησης με ανώτερη και κατώτερη τιμή σφυγμών, σύνολο θερμίδων που κατανάλωσε ο αθλητής κ.λπ.
- GPS για την καταγραφή της ταχύτητας του αθλητή είτε αυτός ποδηλατεί, τρέχει ή ακόμα και εάν κολυμπάει. Φυσικά καταγράφεται επίσης η απόσταση που διανύει κατά την διάρκεια της προπόνησης, ο ρυθμός με τον οποίο κινείται, η διακύμανση του υψομέτρου καθώς και η πορεία την οποία διένυσε.
- Δυνατότητα μεταφοράς των στοιχείων στον Η/Υ και ανάλυση αυτών μέσω λογισμικού προγράμματος το οποίο έχει η κάθε εταιρεία.
- Συμβατότητα με συστήματα μέτρησης της ισχύος κατά την διάρκεια της ποδηλασίας
- Αδιαβροχοποίηση ώστε να μπορεί ο αθλητής να κάνει όλη την προπόνησή του ή τον αγώνα του με την χρήση αυτού του «ρολογιού» μίνι-υπολογιστή.
Η προπόνηση αναβαθμίζεται πολύ όπως επίσης και η σχέση προπονητή – αθλητή. Ο προπονητής πλέον δίνει σαφείς κατευθύνσεις στον αθλητή π.χ.¨Να κάνει 2 ώρες ποδήλατο στους 140 σφυγμούς, 180 watt, 95 rpm και να κάνει 5 φορές από 5 λεπτά στα 300 watt/ 100rpm/ 175bpm. Με λίγα λόγια ο προπονητής μπορεί με απόλυτη ακρίβεια να προσδιορίζει τα προπονητικά φορτία. Ομως μπορεί να καταγράψει και πολλά ενδιαφέροντα στοιχεία π.χ. πόση παρέκλιση είχαμε σε μία μετρημένη διαδρομή κολύμβησης.
Ομως εκτός από το να μας δίνει ο προπονητής μας σαφείς οδηγίες μπορεί να αναλύει όλη την προπονησή μας και να εντοπίζει σημαντικά στοιχεία που πρέπει να μας επισημάνει, όπως η παρέκλιση από τον στόχο της προπόνησης, συμπτώματα κόπωσης ή και υπερπροπόνησης κ.λπ.
Τι πρέπει να προσέξουμε όταν επιλέγουμε ένα τέτοιο αξεσουάρ:
- Να επιλέξουμε αξιόπιστη εταιρεία, τα προϊόντα της οποίαςείναι δοκιμασμένα στον αθλητισμό,
- Να επιλέξουμε εταιρεία που εξιδεικεύεται στο τρίαθλο,
- Να προσέξουμε το θέμα της εγγύησης εξετάζοντας την αξιοπιστία και τον επαγγελματισμού του αντιπροσώπου,
- Να επιλέξουμε ένα ρολόι που θα καλύπτει όλες τις προπονήσεις μας, π.χ. να μπορούμε να το χρησιμοποιήσουμε στο ανοιχτό νερό,
- Να επιλέξουμε εταιρεία με εύχρηστο και εύκολα προσβάσιμο (και από τον προπονητή) λογισμικό.
Εάν η επιλογή του προπονητή μας είναι το πιο σημαντικό στοιχείο για την αθλητική μας εξέλιξη η επιλογή του συγκεκριμένου αξεσουάρ είναι το δεύτερο πιο σημαντικό στοιχείο. Είναι η παρέα μας στην προπόνηση -ή ο αυτόματος πιλότος όπως συνήθως το ονομάζουμε στην προπονητική γλώσσα- που όταν παρεκλίνουμε μας επαναφέρει και είναι τα «μάτια» του προπονητή μας που καταγράφουν ότι κάνουμε. Ενας τριαθλητής δεν μπορεί κάθε φορά που κολυμπάει, κάνει ποδήλατο ή τρέχει να έχει συνεχώς τον προπονητή του. Η ύπαρξη αυτών ρολογιών τον βοηθάει να παρακολουθεί την προπόνηση σαν να ήταν μπροστά. Ισως μάλιστα στο μέλλον η τεχνολογία να προχωρήσει ακόμα περισσότερο και μία κάμερα να καταγράφει όλη την προπόνησή μας.
